Abdullah Alghashim (b. 1994) is a multidisciplinary Saudi artist based between Riyadh and Unaizah. His practice investigates the dynamic thresholds between inherited material culture, human memory, and natural ecosystems. Through a rigorous integration of sculpture, digital fabrication, interactive light systems, and organic mediums, Alghashim bridges the gap between ancestral craftsmanship and contemporary new media.
Crucial to his conceptual framework is the exploration of plant intelligence. He seamlessly integrates nature into his work, treating botanical elements not merely as aesthetic materials but as living collaborators that respond, adapt, and evolve within his installations. This organic research is guided by an eco-conscious mandate, rooted in the philosophy of Ihsan (absolute mastery), ensuring his material decisions remain sustainable and actively converse with their environment.
Deeply grounded in regional heritage, Alghashim is formally trained in the structural anatomy and visual syntax of traditional Najdi door carving. Rather than treating this craft as a static artifact, he extracts its architectural essence to inform modern abstractions. By pairing tactile, hand-carved materials with emerging technologies, he reactivates ancestral geometries for the contemporary era.
Alghashim holds a B.A. in English Language and Translation from Qassim University. His conceptual framework continues to expand through global dialogue, recently highlighted by his participation in a cultural exchange program in Japan, and exhibiting defining works such as Echo of Patteren at the Coollect exhibition in Riyadh’s JAX District. As the founder of Quote Studio, a multidisciplinary art and production space in Unaizah, his practice remains a continuous endeavor to prove that traditional roots possess the capacity to adapt, pulse, and communicate with an uncompromising contemporary energy.
